Your child will bring home a 'sound book' to let them practice their phonics at home.
Also coming home regularly for practice will be a range of what we call 'tricky words', those which don't 'sound out' such as 'said', 'when', 'the' and so on...
Year 1 and 2
Children bring home a weekly list of words to learn to spell. These often have common features (night, bright, sight...) or may be ones from your child's writing which s/he is finding consistently tricky (such as remembering that 'e' at the end of 'have'!)
The idea of learning spellings is not just to get them correct for the 'test' but to integrate this learning into any writing from then on.
