Our values have been an integral part of the workings of our school for many years and form the basis of our School Vision, which describes who we are and is the powerful thread that runs through all we do:

What do we mean by 'Values'?

The dictionary defines values as, "Principles or standards of behaviour; one's judgement of what is important in life." In school, we explain this by teaching children that:

These values are at the core of the school, at the very centre of what we want for our children and as such, they form the basis for our vision, shape our curriculum, guide the way we teach social skills and provide the vocabulary for our behaviour management. They are distinctly Christian values, which is very important to us as a Church school, but are equally relevant for children and families of all backgrounds and beliefs. Our families often tell us about how the values translate seamlessly into home life and every day, we see the children applying the values to their behaviour and approaches to learning in school, which is one of the first things commented on by visitors. We are very proud of the way our values enable our children to identify and express their emotions and describe and explain their thinking, reasoning and attitudes to all areas of life and learning.

St Nics' Values Journey

In September 2011, the school introduced values to our teaching and behaviour management and it transformed the way both adults and children understood, thought about and spoke about behaviour in particular. We began with twenty-two values (one a month for a two year cycle), but this was a lot to keep track of and far too many for children to remember, so in the Autumn of 2018, we reviewed our values alongside our hopes and dreams for the children, taking into account their life experiences, individual needs and factors affecting their learning. We consulted children, parents, staff and governors about our ideas for reducing the number of values and in January 2019 we drew all of this together into a curriculum document which shows our vision and values and how these drive our curriculum, fulfilling our aims for the children in our care.
