Governors

Please find below details of how our Governing body is structured, including the names, categories, responsibilities and terms of appointment for each Governor.

Governors: What are they and why do schools have them?

Behind the scenes of our school are eleven volunteers who work tirelessly to support our staff in their work. These volunteers form our Governing Body.

There are different categories of governors.
At St Nics’ we have:
  • 2 Parent Governors - elected by the parents/carers of the children currently in school
  • 1 Staff Governor - elected by all staff employed at school
  • 7 Foundation Governors - As a Voluntary Aided school we have governors appointed by the Diocese or St Nicolas’ Parish Council, and one appointed by All Saints Parish Council.
  • 1 Local Authority-The LA governor represent the LA on the governing body.
  • The Head Teacher is also a governor

So why do schools bother having a Governing Body?
Leading a school is a complicated and demanding role for anyone. The Head Teacher is responsible for the day-to-day internal organisation, leadership, management and control of the school, and for advising the Governing Body. Both Head and Governing Body work in partnership to promote the school’s mission and ethos, and to foster school improvement and high quality education.

Governors have three main roles:
  • To provide strategic direction for the school
  • To act as a critical friend to the headteacher
  • To ensure accountability

They also carry out a number of other important duties, which include:
  • Determining broadly how the school's budget is spent
  • The appointment of certain staff
  • Setting standards for pupils' behaviour
  • Making sure the site is safe
  • Setting and monitoring certain school policies, including collective worship
  • Monitoring the quality of educational standards

Governor Organisation

Governors operate a  'flat style' of governance. Each governor has a clear area of responsibility to monitor and to report back on to the FGB.  Half termly meetings have a focus on either Finance, Premises and Resources or Children, Learning and Community and agendas reflect these aspects of school provision and work.

There are panels to manage Headteacher Performance Management, School Admissions and Teachers’ Pay Review. Ad Hoc panels or working parties will be convened as required, e.g. Complaints, pupil /parent surveys etc.
