PSHE including RSHE

Personal, Social, Health and Economic Education (PSHE), including Relationships, Sex and Health Education (RSHE)

Intent - Our Vision

Through our use of the Jigsaw PSHE programme, we aim to support our children to:

  • Learn about themselves as developing individuals and as valued members of their communities, building on their own experiences.
  • Develop the knowledge and skills needed to keep themselves healthy, safe and happy.
  • Show kindness and respect towards themselves and others in all aspects of school life.
  • Understand and talk about their own feelings, while developing empathy for others.
  • Recognise and begin to understand the views, needs and rights of other people.
  • Develop key social skills such as sharing, turn-taking, cooperation, helping others, resolving simple conflicts and understanding how to respond to unkind behaviour, including bullying.
  • Take an active and positive role in the life of the school and the wider community.

Implementation - How we will deliver this to achieve our goal

Our PSHE and RSHE curriculum is delivered through the Jigsaw PSHE programme, which provides a structured, progressive and age-appropriate scheme of learning for children in Reception, Year 1 and Year 2. Jigsaw is embedded within a whole-school ethos that prioritises wellbeing, relationships and personal development.

  • Jigsaw lessons are taught weekly and follow the six half-termly themes, ensuring consistency and progression across the school.
  • Each lesson includes calming ‘Connect Us’ activities, opportunities for reflection and discussion, and child-centred approaches that support emotional literacy.
  • We use Circle Time approaches within Jigsaw to encourage children to listen carefully, express their ideas and respect the contributions of others.
  • The programme supports the development of independence, confidence, resilience and self-esteem in our youngest learners.
  • Our school values are interwoven throughout all learning, reinforcing positive behaviour and respectful relationships.

We also create a strong sense of community by:

  • Actively seeking pupil voice: children in Year 2 share ideas through class discussions and the School Council. School Council representatives also engage with Reception and Year 1 children to ensure their views are heard.
  • Providing opportunities for responsibility, such as classroom roles and contributing to caring for the school environment, including involvement in our Year 1 Green Team initiatives.
  • Ensuring learning is relevant to children’s real-life experiences, both in school and beyond.

Impact - How we know our vision has come to fruition

Our children are ready for the next stage of their educational journey, leaving us with:

  • Showing empathy, kindness and respect towards others.
  • Understanding their emotions and beginning to manage them effectively.
  • Developing a sense of dignity, in which they understand their own value and have a sense of belonging.
  • Having the confidence to express their views and stand up for what is right, challenging injustice and unfairness in an age-appropriate way.
  • Demonstrating the basic skills needed to keep themselves healthy, safe and prepared for the next stage of their education.
